Tips for Nurturing Healthy Plants and Flowers the Organic Way
By: Nan Ondra
Organic container gardening follows the same principles as in-ground gardens: build healthy soil, provide natural nutrients, and use eco-friendly methods to manage pests.
Start With the Soil
Commercial potting soils often contain synthetic fertilizers and wetting agents. With rising interest in organic gardening, many centers now stock organic mixes. These are convenient but can be costly, and ingredients may not always be clear.
For control and cost-effectiveness, create your own mix. A simple recipe is equal parts garden soil and compost (sifted to remove lumps). Adjust texture with sand or perlite if too wet, or add more compost/peat moss if too dry. For a lighter, soil-less mix, combine equal parts compost or peat moss with perlite.
The Need to Feed
Container plants face two challenges: limited root space and nutrient loss through drainage. To compensate, ensure organic nutrients are present in the potting mix before planting.
Fertilizer Tips
- Blend a dry, all-purpose organic fertilizer into the mix.
- Use compost-rich soil for natural nutrient supply.
- Apply liquid organic fertilizer regularly during the growing season.
Always follow package directions for dosage and frequency.
Pest Patrol
Containers reduce many pest problems since plants are raised above ground and kept closer to the house. Regular observation helps you catch issues early.
Organic Pest Control Methods
- Pinch off pest-bearing leaves or buds.
- Hand-pick larger pests and drop them into soapy water.
- Use insecticidal soap sprays if needed, following label instructions.
These least-toxic methods keep your plants healthy while protecting the environment.
