Description

Rebutia pulvinosa is a small, slow-growing cactus with spherical to shortly cylindrical stems. This species is covered in a net of small densely brown areoles with short silvery-white intersecting spines.

The stems are up to 1.2 inches in diameter and rarely grow taller than 1.4 inches . Flowers are diurnal, long-lasting (about ten days), bright orange flowers, funnel-shaped, up to 2 inches long, up to 1.6 inches in diameter. Fruits are small, globose, and purple.

Environment

Rebutias thrive in bright light and a range of conditions. Many species can be grown in partial shade to full sun. However, as these are mountain species, they do not appreciate high temperatures, which should be avoided.

It requires rich, fast draining porous cactus soil. Repotting may be done every 2-3 years. Ideally use 50% Potting Soil + 15% cocopeat + 25% Organic manure / Vermicompost + 5% charcoal chips + 5% perlite.

Water the soil abundantly when it is dry to the touch. Allow soil to drain thoroughly before watering again. Allow the soil mix to become nearly dry between waterings, but then water thoroughly. Suspend watering in the winter, but mist occasionally.

During the growing season, fertilize with a cacti fertilizer mix.

Landscape Uses

It is used as an ornamental, It is an excellent plant for container growing. It always looks good and stays small.

The easiest to keep alive - Cactus thrive on neglect! Coming from desert climates cactus love sun! However beware of the Indian afternoon sun! Keeping them in extreme heat, especially behind a glass which magnifies the heat can cause the cactus to burn. If you notice the cactus turning brown or yellow on the side facing the sun, try giving it a cooler place to thrive in!

For watering cacti, the golden rule is to make sure the soil is completely dry before watering! This will stop the roots from rotting. It is advised to always use a pot with a drainage hole so that excess water can get drained out. If kept in a sunny area, you will need to water it once every week. If it is in a semi shaded or filtered light area, you might need to water it once in 2 weeks.

Cacti like soil that is well aerated and fast draining. You can fertilise the cactus in the summer months when it is in its growing season. During the winters it is best to cut back on any fertiliser and let the plant rest.
