Spiny Pincushion Cactus
Family
Cactaceae
Native
Mexico
Description
Mammillaria spinosissima “Un Pico” is a stable genetic mutation of Mammillaria spinosissima. The difference to the wild type is not only the much longer spines but also the fact that only one spine is growing from each areole. Un Pico is columnar solitary, slowly clumping with dark blue-green stem, rarely exceeding 30 cm tall and 10 cm in diameter.
Flowers are Purple red, 12 mm long and in diameter.
Environment
A non-demanding species, Mammillaria is a slow growing cactus. It requires moderate watering in summers and no water in the winter season. High level of sunlight is required for good flowering and spine maturation. It is susceptible to sunburn if moved quickly from shade to complete sunlight and hence needs time for adapting.
Landscape Uses
It is an excellent plant for garden rockery settings, desert type landscapes, patios and botanical gardens
