Product Description

Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri', or Sprenger's Asparagus Fern, is a graceful evergreen with dense, feathery green foliage and naturally arching stems. Ideal for hanging baskets, containers, balconies and bright shaded spaces.

Graceful Arching Foliage for Indoor and Shaded Spaces

Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri', commonly known as Sprenger's Asparagus Fern, is an attractive evergreen perennial belonging to the Asparagaceae family and native to South Africa. Although commonly called a fern, it is not a true fern and is instead a member of the asparagus family. It is valued for its dense, soft-looking foliage and graceful arching habit, making it a popular ornamental plant for indoor and shaded outdoor spaces.

The plant produces numerous slender, arching stems covered with fine, needle-like green foliage, creating a lush and feathery appearance. It forms a spreading mound that can reach approximately 1–3 ft in height and 3–4 ft in width, with individual stems extending outward and cascading over the sides of containers. Small white flowers may appear periodically and can be followed by attractive red berries.

Environment

Sunlight: Grows best in bright filtered light or partial shade. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sunlight, which can cause the foliage to yellow or become scorched. It can tolerate lower light conditions, although the foliage may become less vibrant.

Watering: Keep the soil moderately and consistently moist during active growth, but allow excess water to drain freely. Avoid allowing the plant to remain in soggy or waterlogged soil.

Soil: Prefers organically rich, fertile soil with good drainage. A moisture-retentive but well-drained growing medium helps maintain healthy, lush foliage.

Fertilizer: Feed periodically during active growth with a balanced fertilizer to encourage healthy foliage and vigorous development.

Landscape Uses

  • Excellent as an indoor foliage plant in bright filtered light.
  • Ideal for hanging baskets, allowing its arching stems to cascade naturally.
  • Suitable for shaded balconies, patios, and other protected outdoor spaces.
  • Works well as a graceful container plant for adding soft, feathery texture to plant displays.

In general, ferns are low-maintenance and hardy, but they do require a bit of upkeep. Ferns require a lot of indirect bright light and not direct sunlight. You can keep it in balconies but make sure no direct sun falls on the leaves. As the ferns have fragile leaves, they tend to burn.

Ferns in general love humidity. You can spray in the air above the fern and let the mist settle on leaves. Most ferns like an evenly moist soil with regular waterings. Water them daily but just enough to keep the soil moist and not wet. Allowing the soil to dry out between waterings stresses these plants.
