Product Description

Bauhinia acuminata, or Safed Kachnar, is an attractive flowering shrub with distinctive bilobed leaves and large, fragrant white orchid-like flowers. Growing to around 2–3 m, it is ideal for gardens, borders, hedges and spacious containers.

Fragrant White Orchid-Like Flowers with Distinctive Bilobed Foliage

Bauhinia acuminata, commonly known as the Dwarf White Orchid or Safed Kachnar, is an attractive flowering shrub belonging to the Fabaceae family and native to Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. It develops an upright, branching habit and can reach approximately 2–3 m in height, making it a versatile ornamental plant for gardens and outdoor spaces.

The plant is easily recognized by its distinctive bilobed leaves, which resemble an ox hoof and can measure approximately 6–15 cm across. Its most attractive feature is its large, fragrant white flowers, measuring around 8–12 cm in diameter, with five white petals, yellow-tipped stamens and a green stigma. The plant can flower throughout the year under suitable growing conditions, providing extended seasonal interest.

Environment

Sunlight: Grows well in full sun to partial shade. Bright sunlight encourages healthy growth and flowering, while some protection from harsh afternoon sun can be beneficial in hot Indian conditions.

Watering: Provide moderate and regular watering, particularly during active growth and warmer periods. Keep the soil adequately moist but avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil that retains some moisture. A rich growing medium with good drainage supports healthy root development and flowering.

Fertilizer: Feed periodically during active growth with a balanced fertilizer to support healthy foliage and encourage flowering.

Landscape Uses

  • Ideal as a flowering ornamental shrub for gardens and landscape borders.
  • Suitable for hedges and informal screening.
  • Can be grown as a specimen plant where its fragrant white flowers can be appreciated.
  • Suitable for large containers and spacious patios where adequate sunlight is available.

These plants need access to bright sunlight to remain healthy and blooming. An east-facing balcony is the best place for the plants in Indian conditions. Try keeping them in bright sunlight but also where they get a little cover from the harsh afternoon sun. Some plants which are a little tender tend to burn due to the same.
