Podocarpus macrophyllus

Family

Podocarpaceae

Origin

South East Asia

Description

This upright, dense evergreen has pointed, leathery, dark green leaves arranged on stiff, symmetrical branches and works very well as a screen, hedge, strong accent plant, or framing tree. The crown forms a somewhat pyramidal to oval outline. Able to reach 90 feet in height, Nagi Podocarpus is usually seen at 30 to 40 feet in height due to the moderately-slow growth rate. Compact branching habit and very dark green foliage make this a dense tree in full sun, more open but surprisingly dense in shade.

Note : The plant might differ a little than the picture as each Bonsai is created differently.

Environment

Likes slightly moist soil, as its root ball must not be allowed to dry out, but be sure to provide adequate drainage. The small leathery leaves of the Podocarpus will not lose much water from transpiration which makes it important to avoid overwatering this plant; Gray needles and root rot are a sign of overwatering. Increase humidity with misting and a humidity tray; these shallow trays are filled with small stones and have water in the bottom of the tray. Make sure the water does not reach the bottom of the Bonsai pot to prevent root rot. As the water evaporates, it creates an appropriate level of humidity mimicking the Podocarpus s natural environment.

Bonsais are beautiful to look at and are considered auspicious too. The popular myth for Bonsai is that they can be kept indoors, however the reality is far from it! Bonsais are essentially trees which have been moulded into micro bodies!

Bonsai needs sufficient bright light. Keep it near a bright window or in semi shade. In balconies keep it on the eastern side where the sun is not very harsh on them. Keep the soil for bonsai moist. Don't over water it or keep the soil very wet or it will shed the leaves and eventually cause a root rot.
