Description

Tropical evergreen tree are very appreciated for its great resistance and the emission of aerial roots, which give it a lot of character. The emission of aerial roots is a characteristic of many ficus species. Through them, the tree can extend its branches and occupy a large area of  land. F. retusa can also develop as an epiphyte, germinating its seed in the crown of another tree, having been deposited with the dejection of a bird or other animal that has ingested its fruits (figs). From there, it emits its roots, which, sliding down the trunk of the host tree, reach the ground. At that time they begin to swell, reaching to strangle him. That's how he gets names like matapalo or dendrocida.

Environment

Watering should be done abundantly in summer and moderate in winter. Keep it in a warm climate like near a window where it gets plenty of sunlight. Transplanting should be done twice a year during the spring time. Pruning should also be done during this time. Clamping can be done when it has 4 to 6 leaves. Wiring can be done throughout the year.

Bonsais are beautiful to look at and are considered auspicious too. The popular myth for Bonsai is that they can be kept indoors, however the reality is far from it! Bonsais are essentially trees which have been moulded into micro bodies!

Bonsai needs sufficient bright light. Keep it near a bright window or in semi shade. In balconies keep it on the eastern side where the sun is not very harsh on them. Keep the soil for bonsai moist. Don't over water it or keep the soil very wet or it will shed the leaves and eventually cause a root rot.
