Red Powder-Puff Blooms on Distinctive Three-Leaflet Foliage
Calliandra tergemina var. emarginata, commonly known as the Dwarf Powder Puff, is an attractive evergreen shrub belonging to the Fabaceae family and native from Mexico to Venezuela. It is valued for its distinctive foliage, compact ornamental form, and colourful powder-puff flowers. Under suitable growing conditions, the plant can reach approximately 1–3 m in height, making it a versatile choice for gardens and outdoor spaces.
The plant has unusual compound leaves, with each leaf bearing three characteristic kidney- to lung-shaped leaflets. Young foliage may show an attractive orangey tint before developing into light to medium green leaves. Rounded flower heads, approximately 2.5–6 cm across, are formed by numerous long, filamentous stamens in shades of red to pinkish-red. The flowers provide a striking contrast against the foliage, while the subsequent seed pods add further seasonal interest.
Environment
