Golden-Striped Green Foliage with Brilliant Orange Flowers

Canna Lily Bengal Tiger is a spectacular tropical perennial from the Cannaceae family, admired for its beautifully striped foliage and vivid summer flowers. Its broad, upright green leaves are marked with distinctive yellow stripes, creating an attractive variegated effect throughout the growing season. This vigorous rhizomatous variety thrives in warm conditions and brings a strong tropical character to sunny gardens, borders, and large containers.

The richly patterned foliage provides a striking backdrop for the bright orange flowers that appear above the leaves during the warm growing season. The combination of golden-striped foliage and fiery orange blooms gives Bengal Tiger an especially dramatic appearance, making it one of the most visually distinctive Cannas for ornamental planting. Flowering extends from June to October in the plains and from July to November in hilly regions. Plant the rhizomes between February and April in the plains or March and May in hilly regions for a colourful summer display.

Environment

Sunlight: Performs best in full sun, which encourages strong growth, vibrant foliage markings, and abundant flowering. A bright location protected from strong winds is ideal.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during active growth and flowering. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular moisture once new shoots emerge, while avoiding prolonged waterlogging.

Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or other organic matter. A moisture-retentive growing medium supports healthy rhizome development and lush foliage.

Fertilizer: Apply a slow-release fertilizer at planting and feed periodically during the growing season. Regular nutrition encourages vigorous foliage and sustained flowering.

Flowering plants need access to bright sunlight to remain healthy and blooming. An easy facing balcony is the best place for the plants in Indian conditions. Try keeping them in bright sunlight but also where they get a little cover from the harsh afternoon sun. Some plants which are a little tender tend to burn due to the same.

Plants with thin leaves need daily watering and ones with thick leaves need watering 3-4 times a week. This will also depend on the season. Generally during the blooming period, plants love a lot of water. Try keeping the soil moist. During winters it is better to cut back on watering.

Keep the plants in a well drained soil with a drainage hole at the bottom. This will help to avoid over watering. Take care as to not leave stagnant water on top of the soil. Fertilise the plant once in 2-3 weeks during its blooming period. Do not fertilise it in winters.
