Brilliant Scarlet Blooms Above Deep Burgundy-Bronze Foliage
Canna Lily Red King Humbert is a striking tropical perennial from the Cannaceae family, valued for its tall growth, deep burgundy-bronze foliage, and brilliant scarlet flowers. Its broad, upright leaves feature rich dark tones with subtle longitudinal veining, creating a dramatic ornamental display even when the plant is not in bloom. This vigorous rhizomatous variety thrives in warm climates and makes an impressive feature in spacious garden beds, borders, and large containers.
During the warm growing season, Red King Humbert produces prominent clusters of bright red to reddish-orange flowers above its lush foliage. The combination of richly coloured leaves and vivid blooms creates a strong tropical effect, particularly when several plants are grown together. The plants can reach approximately 1.5–1.8 m in height, while flowering generally occurs from April to July in the plains and from May to August in hilly regions. Plant the rhizomes from January to March in the plains or February to April in hilly regions for a rewarding seasonal display.
Environment
Sunlight: Grow in a sunny location for strong growth and abundant flowering. Cannas can tolerate some light shade, but brighter conditions generally produce better blooms and stronger foliage colour.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist throughout active growth, particularly during hot weather and flowering. Water deeply and allow excess moisture to drain away rather than leaving the rhizomes in stagnant water.
Soil: Prefers fertile, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage. Enrich the planting area with compost or well-decomposed organic matter before placing the rhizomes.
Fertilizer: Apply a slow-release fertilizer at planting and provide additional feeding during the growing season. Regular nutrition supports vigorous foliage and sustained flowering.
