Celosia cristata 'Concertina Mix', commonly known as Cockscomb Celosia, is a striking warm-season flowering annual from the Amaranthaceae family. This compact variety is admired for its unique crested flower heads with a velvety texture, resembling colourful coral formations. Its bold appearance and long-lasting blooms make it an excellent choice for vibrant garden displays.

Concertina Mix produces a cheerful blend of red, yellow, orange, pink and burgundy blooms above fresh green foliage. Plants typically grow to a height of 20–30 cm, developing into compact, bushy mounds that are ideal for flower beds, borders, edging and decorative containers. The distinctive flower heads retain their vibrant colour for an extended period, adding lasting beauty to the landscape.

In most parts of India, Concertina Mix flowers abundantly from summer through autumn. Its excellent tolerance to heat and humidity makes it a dependable choice for adding brilliant seasonal colour to gardens, balconies and outdoor living spaces.

Seed Preparation & Sowing Tips

  • Keep the growing medium evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Provide bright sunlight after germination to encourage sturdy, compact growth.
  • Transplant seedlings after they develop 2–3 true leaves.

Landscape Uses

Celosia cristata Concertina Mix is perfect for flower beds, borders, edging, patio containers, balcony planters and mass landscape plantings. Its unique crested blooms also make it an attractive choice for seasonal colour displays and mixed flowering gardens.

Make sure your seedling tray or pot (whichever you choose) has a drainage hole in it. If you choose a pot, a 5€ pot should be fine. You can either use well drained soil or make a combination of 1 part each of cocopeat, vermiculite and perlite.

While sowing seeds make sure the soil is damp and not wet. Water the seeds as the soil starts to dry. It should always be moist, but never wet or muddy. Do not water the seeds if the soil is already moist to the touch, as overwatering your plant can be just as harmful as underwatering.

Keep the seedling tray in bright filtered light to begin with. Slowly introduce the plant to morning sun and bring it back in before the afternoon sun sets in. In a weeks time you can put it in direct sunlight.
