Product Description

A striking flowering climber with double-petaled white blooms, Double White Aparajita (Clitoria ternatea Alba) adds vibrant colour to trellises, fences, and balconies. Valued for its ornamental beauty, medicinal significance, and pollinator-friendly nature.

Elegant Double White Blooms with Traditional Herbal Benefits

Clitoria Ternatea 'Alba' Aparajita Double White Plant, commonly known as White Butterfly Pea or White Aparajita, is an attractive perennial climber belonging to the Fabaceae family. This ornamental and medicinal herb is a white-flowered form of Clitoria ternatea, traditionally valued in herbal practices. It features distinctive double-petaled white flowers with beautifully layered petals, creating a fuller appearance than the traditional single-flowered variety. Its slender, twining stems carry delicate, pinnate green leaves, forming an attractive backdrop for the elegant blooms.

The Double White Aparajita produces beautiful flowers with multiple overlapping white petals arranged around a softly coloured centre, giving them a graceful, ruffled appearance. This vigorous climber develops a branching growth habit and can reach approximately 1.5–3 metres with suitable support and growing conditions. Flowering is most abundant during the summer and monsoon seasons, although plants may bloom for much of the year in warm, frost-free climates. Its ornamental flowers, lush green foliage and traditional herbal significance make it a valuable addition to home gardens.

Herbal and Medicinal Uses

Clitoria ternatea has a long history of use in Ayurveda and other traditional herbal practices. Different parts of the plant, particularly its flowers and roots, have traditionally been used in herbal preparations. The plant contains naturally occurring bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and other antioxidants, which have been investigated in scientific studies for their potential health-supporting properties. Traditionally, Butterfly Pea has been associated with cognitive wellness, memory support and general well-being.

The white flowers can also be used in herbal preparations and infusions. Unlike the blue-flowered Butterfly Pea, the white flowers do not produce the characteristic blue colour or colour-changing effect in herbal tea.

Environment

Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Provide 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily for healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Watering: Water moderately, keeping the soil evenly moist during active growth. Allow the upper layer of soil to dry slightly between watering. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained loamy soil enriched with organic matter. It adapts to various soil types provided drainage is adequate.

Fertilizer: Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer during active growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which may encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowering.

Landscape Uses

  • Ideal for covering trellises, fences, pergolas and garden arches.
  • Excellent for balcony gardens and patio containers with climbing support.
  • Suitable for vertical gardens and decorative outdoor screens.
  • Adds elegant white flowers to cottage gardens and mixed flowering landscapes.
  • A valuable addition to medicinal and home herb gardens.
  • Attracts pollinators and enhances biodiversity in ornamental gardens.

Butterfly Pea need bright sunlight to retain their spectacular colour. Keep it in moderately fertile and well drained soil. You can prune them in summers. Fertilise them once a month in the growing season but Don't fertilise it during winters.
As a houseplant, this plant will do best if you allow it to go dry in between waterings, but if left dry for too long, the leaves will wilt. Check the soil with your finger to ascertain how moist it is. If it feels damp to the touch, then wait a while before watering it.
They also make for beautiful climbers for which you can provide them some support.
