Description

Cyclamen persicum is a small and compact flowering plant with bright colored blooms, attractive leaves.

The foliage grows very compact and the leaves are patterned and kind of heart shaped, which are very attractive without flowers. The basic leaves are green with silver markings and another has a silver marble effect around most of the leaf and the center is green. The beautiful blooms sit well above the foliage on long stems.

The colorful decorative blooms growing on stems sitting above the leaves are available in many colors, including light pink, deep pink, white, red and light pink with the outer edges and bottom of the petals are dark pink in color.

Once the flowers die off and the leaves turn yellow and deteriorate, the plant becomes dormant and wants to rest during the summer period, so if you like "you can have a go at getting the plant to bloom next year." Unlike other plants that grow at their best from spring - fall, the cyclamen does the opposite and grows from the end of fall - spring.

Environment

Cyclamen will grow in sun or partial shade, but they last longer planted in a protected location that remains cool and moist. The are best grown under indirect sunlight.

Water the plant once the soil becomes just about dry to the touch, thoroughly. A good method for watering is to place the plant pot in tepid water and allow the soil and plant to soak up as much as possible, then allow it time to drain before placing it on the plant tray. Immersing them in water avoids water getting inside the crown, which is harmful to them.

A rich well draining potting soil is needed, which retains water but also drains well.

Cyclamen enjoy a low-nitrogen fertilizer once every 2 weeks when they are in bloom.

Landscape Use

Cyclamen makes a wonderful bedding plant outdoors in cool, mild locations.

Properly preparing the soil for bulb planting is essential! Good soil drainage is essential for planting bulbs. If your soil has a lot of clay content, consider adding a bit of coco peat. Consider your sunlight requirements based not he type of bulb you have chosen to go with. Some plants might be happy in a semi shade environment under a tree whereas someone might require full sunlight.

The general rule of thumb for planting spring bulbs is to plant two to three times as deep as the bulbs is tall. This means most large bulbs like tulips or daffodils will be planted about 8 inches deep while smaller bulbs will be planted 3-4 inches deep. Planting depth is measured from the bottom of the bulb.
