Description

Mokara, commonly named by the Smile Orchid,is a hybrid of Ascocentrum, Arachnis and Vanda orchids which have a large number of colors compared to other orchids. Mokara orchid is among those orchid types which are very easy to grow and once these orchids are grown with care, they produce beautiful and exotic-looking blooms.

Mokara possesses a long stem which can produce 10 flowers per stem. Due to their delicacy and bright colors with its striking form of a starfish, Mokaras are popular in wedding bouquets.

Environment

Mokara orchids are included in the bright light orchid group. Mokara orchids are mostly grown indoors so placing it in a spot with morning sunlight,in an east-facing window, until noon will be most sufficient in terms of lighting.M Orchids have a heavy top so you can place a few river rocks around the base of pot to prevent your orchid from leaning over.

Color of the leaves reflects whether Orchid is getting low, sufficient or excess light . Generally healthy orchid leaves are bright green rather than dark green which indicates insufficiency of light. If the leaves turn to a reddish green, this is a clear indication of over lighting your orchid. The Mokara can tolerate full sun but avoid exposing it to direct sunlight since their leaves have flattened surfaces which tend to absorb more heat that can eventually burn the leaves.

Unlike a number of Orchid species, Mokara Orchids require a little more water than most. Water them in the morning; making sure the liquid is at room temperature. The water should be poured through the potting mix for a number of minutes. During warm weather, the plant will need watering up to several times per week. Despite ensuring your new Orchid s thirst is quenched, it s important to never allow it to stand in the water as this can damage the roots.

Potting & Media

Grow these orchids in small deep pots to accommodate the large furry root system. Pot them in bark, perlite, charcoal along with sphagnum moss to retain moisture. Alternatively, substitute bark with coconut husk chips as they do not break down as quickly. Just be sure to wash coconut husk chips very well to get rid of any remaining salt before potting. Salt will burn orchids roots.

Fertilize

Fertilize orchids with 50% dilution of 30-10-10 orchid fertilizer. Fertilize after every four days in their growing season that starts in spring and ends in fall but during winter, Mokara orchids need to be fertilized only once a month.

Orchids needs bright light and can be grown in any fine-textured orchid mix. They can tolerate wide range of temperatures and are able to stand temperatures in the 100º range without suffering.

Orchids should be watered regularly and abundantly. As a rule of thumb, you will want to water more frequently (approximately every 4-5 days) during the warmer months and less frequently (once a week) in the cooler months. During the growing season they require plenty of water and fresh air. Don't let the plants completely dry between watering.
