Pure White Fragrant Flower Spikes on Glossy Green Foliage
Hyacinthus orientalis 'Aiolos', commonly known as Aiolos Hyacinth, is an attractive bulbous flowering plant belonging to the Asparagaceae family. It is prized for its dense, upright spikes packed with pure white, strongly fragrant flowers. The combination of crisp white blooms, glossy green foliage and sweet fragrance makes 'Aiolos' an elegant choice for seasonal gardens, borders and containers.
The plant develops upright, strap-shaped green leaves from the bulb, with sturdy flower stems carrying numerous closely packed, star-shaped to bell-like florets. The dense flower spikes create a substantial, rounded-to-cylindrical appearance and can reach approximately 20–25 cm in height. The bright white flowers stand out beautifully against the green foliage and are also suitable for cut-flower displays.
Flower Colour & Blooming
The flowers are pure white and densely arranged along the upright spike. They have a pronounced, sweet fragrance that is one of the most attractive features of this cultivar. Under suitable Indian growing conditions, flowering is generally associated with the winter to spring season, with the exact timing depending on local temperatures and the cooling period received by the bulbs.
Environment
Sunlight: Grow in full sun to partial shade. Good sunlight encourages strong foliage and well-developed flower spikes, while some protection from intense afternoon heat can be beneficial in warmer Indian locations.
Watering: Keep the soil moderately moist during active growth, particularly after planting and while the bulbs are developing roots and foliage. Avoid excessive watering and prolonged waterlogging, as wet conditions can cause bulb rot.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil. A loose growing medium that allows excess water to drain freely is important for healthy bulb development and flowering.
Fertilizer: Incorporate well-decomposed organic matter into the soil before planting. A suitable bulb or flowering-plant fertilizer can be applied during active growth to support healthy foliage and flowering.
Planting Hyacinth 'Aiolos' Bulbs
Plant the bulbs during the autumn to early winter planting period in suitable Indian regions. Place the bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards in well-drained soil and provide sufficient spacing for the flower spikes to develop. Planting several bulbs together creates a fuller and more impressive display.
