Product Description

Hyacinth 'Aqua' produces dense, fragrant flower spikes in soft light blue to lavender-blue shades above glossy green foliage. Its winter-to-spring blooms are ideal for borders, containers, balconies and cut-flower displays.

Fragrant Light Blue Flower Spikes with a Soft Lavender Hue

Hyacinthus orientalis 'Aqua, commonly known as Aqua Hyacinth, is an attractive spring-flowering bulb belonging to the Asparagaceae family. It is valued for its dense, upright flower spikes covered with fragrant florets in beautiful shades of light blue to lavender-blue. The soft colouring, strong fragrance and compact growth make 'Aqua' an elegant choice for gardens, borders and containers.

The plant develops upright, glossy green, strap-shaped leaves from the bulb, with sturdy flower stems carrying densely packed, star-shaped to bell-shaped florets. The flowers may show subtle shifts between blue, lavender and softer whitish tones as they mature, creating a layered appearance within each spike. The plant generally grows to approximately 20–25 cm in height, making it well suited to group planting and decorative containers.

Flower Colour & Blooming

The flowers are predominantly light blue to lavender-blue, sometimes showing softer whitish tones towards the edges as the blooms mature. The densely packed flower spikes are strongly fragrant and create a striking display against the green foliage. Under suitable Indian growing conditions, flowering is generally expected during the winter to spring season, with timing varying according to local climate and the cooling period received by the bulbs.

Environment

Sunlight: Grow in full sun to partial shade. Good sunlight supports strong stems and flowering, while some protection from intense afternoon heat can be beneficial in warmer Indian locations.

Watering: Keep the soil moderately moist during active growth, particularly after planting and while the bulbs are developing roots and foliage. Avoid excessive watering and prolonged waterlogging, as wet conditions can cause bulb rot.

Soil: Prefers fertile, organically rich and well-drained soil. A loose growing medium that allows excess water to drain freely is important for healthy bulb development.

Fertilizer: Incorporate well-decomposed organic matter into the soil before planting. A suitable bulb or flowering-plant fertilizer can be applied during active growth to support healthy foliage and flowering.

Planting Hyacinth 'Aqua' Bulbs

Plant the bulbs during the autumn to early winter planting period in suitable Indian regions. Place the bulbs in well-drained soil with the pointed end facing upwards and provide adequate spacing for the flower spikes to develop. Planting several bulbs together creates a fuller and more impressive display.

Landscape Uses

  • Ideal for colourful winter-to-spring flower beds and borders.
  • Excellent for planting in groups to create dense, fragrant flower displays.
  • Suitable for decorative containers on balconies, patios and terraces.
  • Works well in rock gardens and mixed seasonal bulb plantings.
  • Excellent as a fragrant cut flower for indoor arrangements and bouquets.

Properly preparing the soil for bulb planting is essential! Good soil drainage is essential for planting bulbs. If your soil has a lot of clay content, consider adding a bit of coco peat. Consider your sunlight requirements based not he type of bulb you have chosen to go with. Some plants might be happy in a semi shade environment under a tree whereas someone might require full sunlight.

The general rule of thumb for planting spring bulbs is to plant two to three times as deep as the bulbs is tall. This means most large bulbs like tulips or daffodils will be planted about 8 inches deep while smaller bulbs will be planted 3-4 inches deep. Planting depth is measured from the bottom of the bulb.
