Family

Asparagaceae

Origin

South Africa

Description

Hyacinth ‘Jan Bos’ produces vibrant reddish-pink flower spikes with a strong, pleasant fragrance. This early-spring bulb adds bold color and aroma to garden beds and containers. Belonging to the Asparagaceae family and native to the Mediterranean, it reaches about 25 cm in height with dense foliage. Plant bulbs from October to December in plains and November to January in hilly areas to enjoy blooms from February to March in plains and March to April in hills, heralding the arrival of spring.

Environment

Hyacinth bulbs thrive best in well-drained loam soil enriched with compost or leaf mould. Water moderately to maintain moist—but not waterlogged—conditions. They prefer full sun but can also flourish in partial shade, with planting depths of 5–6 inches. Suitable for cool, partially shaded environments, their optimal temperature range is between 10 to 18 °C. During the growth phase, apply a balanced NPK fertilizer or bone meal to support healthy bulb development.

Landscape Use

Grape hyacinths are good for planting in rock gardens, in the front of beds and borders, or along walkways and paths.

Properly preparing the soil for bulb planting is essential! Good soil drainage is essential for planting bulbs. If your soil has a lot of clay content, consider adding a bit of coco peat. Consider your sunlight requirements based not he type of bulb you have chosen to go with. Some plants might be happy in a semi shade environment under a tree whereas someone might require full sunlight.

The general rule of thumb for planting spring bulbs is to plant two to three times as deep as the bulbs is tall. This means most large bulbs like tulips or daffodils will be planted about 8 inches deep while smaller bulbs will be planted 3-4 inches deep. Planting depth is measured from the bottom of the bulb.
