Durango Bolero – Bold bicolour French marigold blooms for summer–monsoon beds

Family

Asteraceae

Durango Bolero is a top-performing variety in the Durango series of Tagetes patula (French Marigold), known for its stunning bi-colored flowers. Its vibrant golden-yellow petals with deep mahogany splashes create an eye-catching contrast. This cultivar is prized for its early and long-lasting blooms, as well as its compact growth of around 10-12 inches in height and 8-10 inches in spread.

Durango sets high standards for anemone-type marigolds, with excellent branching for increased blooms and strong stems. This series consistently produces large, double, and crested flowers measuring 2-2.5 inches (5-5.5 cm) in a wide range of beautiful colors. Expect blooms to appear 6-8 weeks after sowing.

Environment

For optimum growth, it is recommended to provide a full day of direct sunlight (at least 6 hours). Use well-drained, fertile loam with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Keep plants 20-25 cm apart to ensure proper air circulation. Water moderately and avoid overwatering. Apply a balanced NPK (such as 10:10:10) or organic fertilizer every 2-3 weeks.

Landscape

Recommended for use in beds, containers, and mass plantings to enhance your landscape.

Make sure your seedling tray or pot (whichever you choose) has a drainage hole in it. If you choose a pot, a 5€ pot should be fine. You can either use well drained soil or make a combination of 1 part each of cocopeat, vermiculite and perlite.

While sowing seeds make sure the soil is damp and not wet. Water the seeds as the soil starts to dry. It should always be moist, but never wet or muddy. Do not water the seeds if the soil is already moist to the touch, as overwatering your plant can be just as harmful as underwatering.

Keep the seedling tray in bright filtered light to begin with. Slowly introduce the plant to morning sun and bring it back in before the afternoon sun sets in. In a weeks time you can put it in direct sunlight.
