Bonanza Bee – Yellow-red bicolour French marigold blooms for summer–monsoon beds

Family

Asteraceae

Bonanza Bee is a striking variety from the Bonanza Series of Tagetes patula (French Marigolds), admired for its deep mahogany-red petals edged with vibrant golden yellow.. With flowers larger than any others of its kind, ranging from 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6 cm), this series boasts a diverse selection of rich, bold colors. Compared to other crested French marigolds, Bonanza has a faster flowering time. In the garden, these plants are known for their top-notch performance. Additionally, Bonanza is an ideal companion plant, effectively repelling pests such as nematodes.

Environment

This variety of Marigold requires full sun exposure, with at least 5-6 hours of daily sunlight. It thrives in loamy, well-drained soil that is enriched with compost. Moderate watering is recommended, allowing the topsoil to dry out between watering. To promote healthy growth, a balanced fertilizer should be applied once every 2-3 weeks. Keep an eye out for aphids and spider mites, and consider using neem oil or organic sprays for effective pest control.

Landscape

Companion planting (repels pests like nematodes)

Make sure your seedling tray or pot (whichever you choose) has a drainage hole in it. If you choose a pot, a 5€ pot should be fine. You can either use well drained soil or make a combination of 1 part each of cocopeat, vermiculite and perlite.

While sowing seeds make sure the soil is damp and not wet. Water the seeds as the soil starts to dry. It should always be moist, but never wet or muddy. Do not water the seeds if the soil is already moist to the touch, as overwatering your plant can be just as harmful as underwatering.

Keep the seedling tray in bright filtered light to begin with. Slowly introduce the plant to morning sun and bring it back in before the afternoon sun sets in. In a weeks time you can put it in direct sunlight.
