Description

Ornithogalum dubium 'Yellow Star' brightens winter gardens with its vibrant clusters of yellow, star-shaped flowers. Known as 'Sun Star,' this bulbous perennial features erect green stems bearing 10-20 large golden-yellow blooms, each with a dark green central ovary. Growing 10 to 50 cm tall, it has narrow, semi-erect, grass-like leaves forming a basal clump 6-12" high. Flowering stems emerge in late spring to early summer as the leaves begin to fade. The blossoms open around midday and close by sunset or in overcast conditions, adding seasonal interest with their striking form and color.

Ornithogalum Dubium bulbs produce bright yellow, star-shaped flowers, ideal for adding cheer to pots and borders in spring. They bloom from February to April in plains and from March to May in hill areas. Plant bulbs between October and November in both plains and hills.

Environment

Ornithogalum Dubium 'Yellow Star' thrives in bright, indirect sunlight or light shade during summer and tolerates direct sun in winter. It should be shielded from intense afternoon heat above 35°C.

Plant in well-drained sandy soil enriched with compost or cocopeat. Water moderately during growth, avoiding waterlogging during summer dormancy. The optimal planting period is from October to December, coinciding with mild winter conditions.

As light feeders, Ornithogalums require balanced nutrition; excessive fertilization may cause leaf tip browning. A fertilizer ratio of N:P:K at 5:2:4 applied in a well-drained potting mix supports sustained vegetative and bulb development.

Store bulbs dry in paper bags during peak summer months (April–June).

Landscape Use

Ideal for spring containers and balcony pots, Ornithogalum Dubium 'Yellow Star' also enhances flower borders, beds, rock gardens, and sunny garden areas.

Caution

All parts of the plant are poisonous, and contact with the sap may cause skin rashes. Ideal for naturalising but may become invasive
