Product Description

Pigeonpea is predominantly a crop of tropical areas mainly cultivated in semi-arid regions of India.

Pigeon Pea (Cajanus cajan) is a perennial shrub widely grown in tropical and semi-arid regions. It is a highly branched plant with a woody base, slender stems, and attractive trifoliate leaves, making it suitable for both home gardens and farms.

Plant Characteristics

  • Perennial shrub often grown as an annual crop
  • Features oblong to elliptical leaflets arranged alternately on stems
  • Produces yellow flowers, sometimes streaked with purple or red
  • Develops flat pods (5–9 cm) containing multiple seeds in varied colors
  • Can grow up to 0.5–4 meters in height

Growing Conditions

  • Thrives in hot and humid climates (18–38°C)
  • Grows in a wide range of soils, from sandy to clay
  • Performs best in well-drained soil (pH 5.0–7.0)
  • Once established, it is drought-tolerant and low maintenance

Sowing & Planting

  • Sow seeds directly in soil at 2.5–10 cm depth
  • Maintain spacing of 30–50 cm between plants
  • Suitable for intercropping with millets, cotton, or sorghum

Care Instructions

  • Use a well-draining soil mix (cocopeat, vermiculite, perlite)
  • Keep soil moist but not waterlogged
  • Start in bright filtered light, then gradually shift to sunlight
  • Ensure pots or trays have proper drainage holes

Make sure your seedling tray or pot (whichever you choose) has a drainage hole in it. If you choose a pot, a 5€ pot should be fine. You can either use well drained soil or make a combination of 1 part each of cocopeat, vermiculite and perlite.

While sowing seeds make sure the soil is damp and not wet. Water the seeds as the soil starts to dry. It should always be moist, but never wet or muddy. Do not water the seeds if the soil is already moist to the touch, as overwatering your plant can be just as harmful as underwatering.

Keep the seedling tray in bright filtered light to begin with. Slowly introduce the plant to morning sun and bring it back in before the afternoon sun sets in. In a weeks time you can put it in direct sunlight.
