Silken Pincushion Cactus

Mammillaria bombycina is an attractive cactus belonging to the Cactaceae family and native to Central Mexico. This species is admired for its dense covering of fine white radial spines that create a silky, woolly appearance around the stem. Each areole also bears a distinctive hooked central spine, adding texture and character to the plant.

As the plant matures, it readily produces offsets from the base, gradually forming dense clusters of stems. During the flowering season, bright pink flowers appear in a circular crown around the top of the cactus, creating a striking contrast against the white spination and making it a favourite among cactus collectors.

Cactus Type: Clumping Cactus
Stem Colour: Green covered with Silky White Spines and Hooked Central Spines
Flower Colour: Bright Pink to Pink-Purple
Blooming Season: Summer
Size: Typically grows 8–15 cm tall and 10–20 cm wide, forming attractive clusters with age

Growing Conditions

Mammillaria bombycina thrives in bright light and benefits from several hours of direct sunlight daily. Grow it in a well-draining cactus mix and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Water sparingly during winter and protect the plant from prolonged moisture and frost. Good airflow and bright conditions encourage compact growth and flowering.

Landscape Uses

Ideal for cactus collections, succulent arrangements, windowsills, balcony gardens, rock gardens, desert-themed landscapes, dish gardens, and decorative containers where its clustering habit and colourful blooms can be showcased.

Special Features

Known for its silky white spines, attractive clustering growth, and vibrant pink flowers, Mammillaria bombycina is a low-maintenance cactus that delivers year-round visual appeal. Its compact size and ease of care make it suitable for both beginners and experienced cactus enthusiasts.

The easiest to keep alive - Cactus thrive on neglect! Coming from desert climates cactus love sun! However beware of the Indian afternoon sun! Keeping them in extreme heat, especially behind a glass which magnifies the heat can cause the cactus to burn. If you notice the cactus turning brown or yellow on the side facing the sun, try giving it a cooler place to thrive in!

For watering cacti, the golden rule is to make sure the soil is completely dry before watering! This will stop the roots from rotting. It is advised to always use a pot with a drainage hole so that excess water can get drained out. If kept in a sunny area, you will need to water it once every week. If it is in a semi shaded or filtered light area, you might need to water it once in 2 weeks.

Cacti like soil that is well aerated and fast draining. You can fertilise the cactus in the summer months when it is in its growing season. During the winters it is best to cut back on any fertiliser and let the plant rest.
