Description

Tillandsia ionantha vanhyningii is a rare sought-after variety of the popular ionantha variety. Its succulent, thick green leaves grow in a star-like pattern off a long "branch-like" body, which in the air plant world this is known as being caulescent.

It is also a hardier plant, which is very good for novice plant owners.

Environment

This variety likes to be misted 1-3 times a week,. Once a week in the winter time and more often and frequently in the summer months. The Funckiana air plant enjoys very bright morning light, late afternoon sun, as well as indirect sunlight and plenty of air circulation.

Like with any air plant, after the bloom cycle is complete, make sure that you remove any dead leaves to allow new flowers to grow.

Soaks that last too long, trapped water in between its leaves - so after a soaking or a heavy misting, make sure you turn it upside down and shake the excess water free. You can leave the air plant upside down until it is fully dry before placing it back in its home.

Landscape Uses

Suitable for Container, Hanging Garden & Xeriscaping

Air plants are unique - they Don't need soil, absorbing water and nutrients through scales on their leaves. Although caring for air plants is really easy, but if not done right it can quickly lead to the plant drying up.

Air plants need regular sprinkling of water on their leaves. However once a week, air plants need to be submerged in water. Take a big enough container and fully submerge your air plant for 3-4 hours. Once soaked, you need to dry them off completely! Hence shake them and put them on a soft towel. Place them under a bright spot for 2-3 hours so that there is no excess water on it. Make sure to dry them or air plants get a root rot very quickly.

Bright filtered or indirect light is ideal for air plants. Morning sun is healthy for the plants, however afternoon sun can quickly burn the leaves. Use a fertiliser once a month in the water when you soak the air plants to keep it healthy.
