The Ficus Microcarpa has green to dark green leaves which alternate up the stem and which are more oval than the Benjamina and more like the Retusa, but broader. Grey-brown bark which is almost smooth has heavy trunk with terrific aerial roots.

Ginseng Ficus, also called Ficus microcarpa, Ficus retusa, and banyan fig, is not the medicinal ginseng plant, but a type of fig. Ginseng Ficus is a low-maintenance bonsai that can be grown indoors or outdoors. It grows a brown fruit which attracts bees, wasps and butterflies.

Environment

This particular tree does not need much attention. You will only need to water it twice or thrice a week at most. The best way to keep your Ficus moist and happy is to mist it with a spray bottle every day.

Feed only in the growing season. You should only fertilize bonsai, however, during the growing season and not during winter or late fall. The basic time for feeding is from late spring through early fall. This type of bonsai can survive without direct sunlight, but you will have a much happier and healthier tree if you place it near a window or an area that receives a lot of sunlight. Repotting should always take place right after the colder season and the beginning of the spring season every three years.

Bonsais are beautiful to look at and are considered auspicious too. The popular myth for Bonsai is that they can be kept indoors, however the reality is far from it! Bonsais are essentially trees which have been moulded into micro bodies!

Bonsai needs sufficient bright light. Keep it near a bright window or in semi shade. In balconies keep it on the eastern side where the sun is not very harsh on them. Keep the soil for bonsai moist. Don't over water it or keep the soil very wet or it will shed the leaves and eventually cause a root rot.
