Sansevierias, apart from being a great air purifier, thrive with minimal care and live for many years, making it the perfect houseplant!
Place sansevierias in moderately bright or filtered light. Good location would be a north-facing window or in front of a bright and sunny window. Although the plant is known to tolerate very low light levels, bright light brings out the colours in the leaves while also keeping it healthy. Keep them away from direct sun.
Allow the soil to go completely dry before watering. When you do water it, make sure to. Water it deeply enough for the water to come out of the drainage hole. Never allow water to stagnate on top of the soil or do not make the soil soggy as that will lead to root rot. You can water it once a week in summers and once in 2 weeks in winters if kept in bright filtered light. After watering the plant, make sure to keep it in a bright area.
Use a fast and well draining soil to keep your Sansevieria as root rot is one of the main reason that kills the plant. You can fertilise it once a month.
Sansevieria trifasciata "Golden Hahnii"
Sansevieria trifasciata cv. Hahnii (a.k.a. Golden Hahnii or Golden Birdnest Sansevieria) is a lovely dwarf cultivar that is only about 15-20 cm tall. Its foliage is arranged in an attractive rosette, the leaves are darker green with a combination of marginal and internal creamy-yellow stripes of variable width/length which are parallel with the veins of the leaf. It also has a little bit of silver in the leaves. Its really awesome! This species can bloom in summer with sweetly fragrant greenish white flowers but this cultivar rarely seems to do so.
Origin: South Africa
Family: Asparagaceae
Height: 15-20 cm tall
Light: Sansevieria thrives in just about any light. Bright light to full sun, will also tolerate low light. It an excellent choice for low light conditions
Water: Allow the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil to dry out between waterings during the growing season. In winter, water just enough to prevent the soil from drying out. Overwatering will cause root rot. Take care not to water the center of the rosette of leaves because they'll rot easily if kept wet.
Humidity: Mist the leaves several times a week with a spray bottle. Mist your plant more frequently in the summer growing season- the more water you can supply the blooms, the healthier it will be.
Temperature: Average room temperatures 60-75 F/16-24 C. It will tolerate fluctuating temperatures, but not extreme cold.
Soil: A loose, well-drained potting mix. It can easily grow in soilless medium also.
Fertilizer: Feed a mild cactus fertilizer during the growing season; do not fertilizer in the winter.
Eliminates: Sansevieria species are believed to act as good air purifiers by removing toxins (such as formaldehyde, xylene and toluene) from the air. The plant convert CO2 to oxygen at night also.
Landscape Uses : Sansevierias can be used with equal effectiveness as an accent plant or in mass in planters or beds.
