Family
Cactaceae
Native
Japan
Description
Astrophytum Onzuka stands out as one of the most exquisite and coveted cultivars of the myriostigma species. Its epidermis is densely speckled with snowy-white patterns reminiscent of the ‘kabuto’ asterias, with each plant displaying unique and evolving designs as it matures.
Characterized by a symmetrical star shape featuring 5 to 6 prominent ribs and a smooth, spineless surface, it presents a sculptural form. The stem ranges from spherical to short cylindrical, measuring 8–10 cm in diameter, with a dark green epidermis occasionally adorned with sparse white hair tufts.
Its striking pale-yellow flowers, often exceeding 5 cm in width, add to its ornamental appeal.
Environment
Like most cacti they're drought tolerant and need very little care and attention to grow well. Not enough sunlight and over-watering are common mistakes.
Plenty of sunshine will keep this cacti more than happy. In a glass room you may have to provide some shade during a hot summers day to prevent sunburn
Feed every 4 weeks with a Nitrogen-poor and Potassium & Phosphorus-rich fertilizer during summer
Landscape Uses
It is an excellent plant for garden rockery settings, desert type landscapes, patios and botanical gardens
