Succulent Care Tips During the Monsoon Season

Succulents are known as drought-tolerant plants because they store water in their leaves and stems, which gives them their characteristic plump and fleshy appearance. While succulent lovers usually find it easy to keep these plants healthy during summer and winter, the monsoon season can be more challenging.

Excess humidity, frequent rainfall, and reduced sunlight during the rainy months can increase the risk of root rot and fungal infections. With a few simple precautions, however, succulents can continue to thrive even during the monsoon.

If you already have succulents at home or are planning to grow them during the rainy season, the following care tips will help keep your plants healthy and growing.

💧 1. Water Succulents Sparingly

Succulents do not require frequent watering, especially during the monsoon. Before watering, check the soil moisture level. If the soil is still damp, avoid watering the plant. The easiest way to check is by inserting your finger about 2–3 inches into the soil. Water only when the top layer feels completely dry.

🪴 2. Ensure Proper Drainage

Succulent pots must have proper drainage holes so excess water can easily escape. If water remains trapped in the pot, it can quickly cause root rot. If you are using decorative pots without holes, add a thick layer of gravel or clay aggregates at the bottom to improve drainage.

🌧️ 3. Protect Succulents from Heavy Rain

Heavy rainfall can damage succulents and cause water to accumulate around the leaves and roots. During intense rains, move your plants indoors or place them in a shaded area such as a covered balcony or window ledge.

It is also important to remove dead leaves regularly to maintain plant hygiene and prevent pest or fungal problems during the humid season.

☀️ 4. Provide Adequate Sunlight

Succulents require good sunlight to stay healthy. During the monsoon, cloudy weather often reduces light levels, which can cause colourful succulents to temporarily turn green. This is normal.

Whenever possible, place your succulents where they receive gentle morning sunlight or bright indirect light to maintain healthy growth.

🌬️ 5. Remove Stagnant Water

Always remove excess water that collects in trays or plates under the pot. Standing water can increase humidity around the roots and lead to decay. Allow good air circulation around the plants so any extra moisture can evaporate naturally.
